About Kazi

KAZI

Kazi means employment in Swahili and employment is an integral part of their business model.
With a population in excess of 1 billion and a low labour demand, unemployment is as high as 80-96% across Sub-Saharan Africa. Throughout the continent, men and women are in need of income that sustainable jobs provide to support their families with food, shelter and education.
WHAT IS THE KAZI ANSWER?

High Volume Handmade Production

Kazi is a member of the fair trade federation and employs over 6000 artisans, 98% being women from Rwanda, Uganda and Ghana. 94% of the artisans have purchased livestock or land as an investment after working with the organisation and 96% of their artisan's children have or are attending primary school - some standing as the first generation to get this level of education in their family.

Their significant impact landed the organisation with a feature on Forbes digital with the title “Largest Artisan employer in Africa that combats poverty.” You can say that Kazi’s priority is not on consumable aesthetics in the design market but rather on empowering valuable skills for the development of rural artisans. Their thoughtful pieces have been carefully curated to stay true to old-world techniques and traditions while being environmentally friendly throughout their production. All-natural materials are sourced from their artisans' communities to ensure traceability in the supply chain and complete sustainability in material sourcing. Kazi’s artisans work with natural fibres of sisal and sweet grass and the dyeing process is done using organic dyes.

Every handwoven creation is a perfect expression of old Africa and is as vibrant & dynamic as the superwomen across Africa that are shaping their local communities and as memorable as the African heart.
