About Amsha

AMASHA

Amsha means “wake up” in Swahili and that is precisely how it all started for the organisation. The mission is simple for Amsha - make the world a better place, for the people and our planet - one handmade product at a time.

Founded by Laura Walker in 2008 while volunteering in a remote village in Kenya - Walker was initiated with questions during an austere conversation with a young local man. The conversation was served with complicated to ask questions and difficult to understand answers but as Laura Walker grew to understand the complexities that were embedded in underserved communities across Africa - the story of Amsha too began to be written.

Amsha is creating conscious pieces from start to finish all across Africa. The organisation works with 9 women co-operatives and several independent artisans throughout Kenya, Rwanda, Ghana and South Africa. In admiration for their artisans' work - the organisation is combining modern design with time-honoured techniques which in turn is a substantial hand in the preservation of Africa's in-tangiable cultrual heritage.

Their path for economic independence is trendy, eco-friendly and full of artisanal vibrancy.
